'EDEN'

A GARDEN FOR ADAM,

EMULATION OF SELF AND WITH A COMPASSIONATE HAND, TO OTHERS......... CLIENT; AN ELDERLY RETIRED SALVATION ARMY VOLUNTEER JONAH SOUGHT A PLACE OF WHICH HIS SOCIAL ACTIVITIES COULD CONTINUE WITHIN A MORE DISCREET LOCATION. THOUGH A RESIDENCE, THE ‘EDEN ’ IS A PLACE THAT CREATES A GARDEN FOR ADAM (AFTER BIBLICAL TALES AND MICHAELANGELO‘S ‘CREATION OF ADAM’ ). IT IS A REPRESENTATION OF A CELESTIAL PROLOGUE TO A NEW LIFE.
THE ENTWINDED WOOL LIKE MANE WITHIN A HISTORICALLY INDUSTRIAL SITE IS A TECHNIQUE FOR COLLARBORATION AND A POINT OF IMPENDING CONTACT BETWEEN TWO ENTITIES. THE CORE A SPROUT FROM WHICH THE LIVING SPACES STEP OUTWARDS. IT’S TOWER OF REVEALED SECRETS CREATES MOVEMENT OF THE FIVE SENSES. TO BE SEEMINGLY ENCOMPASSED WITHIN A BUBBLE OF WATER IN THE PRIVATE AREA OF THE BEDROOM, IS TO EXPERIENCE AN EVENT IN NEW THOUGHT. THE ‘EDEN ’ ALLOWS AN INTERACTION WITH A TROJAN-LIKE WATER FORM. DERIVED LARGELY FROM THE HISTORICAL INFLUENCES OF THIS REGION AND IT‘S PREVIOUS TIES TO WOOL EXPORTS AT PORT ADELAIDE DOCKS. IT USES INFLUENCES FROM PREVIOUS CONCEPTS SUCH AS SHIFTING LANDSCAPE TO BIRTH WALLS OUT FROM IT’S CORE, FURTHERMORE DROPPING AWAY AT POINTS TO CREATE A FEELING OF WEIGHTLESSNESS. THE LOUNGE BECOMES A CENTRIFUGE OF ACTIVITY. ORGANIC SHAPES CONNECTING AND COMMUNICATING OVER THE SITE AND INTERTWINING IN PART TO PROVIDE STRUCTURE. THE ROOF IS FENESTRATED TO ALLOW THE WOVEN FORMS TO INTERACT WITHIN AND TO LIGHT THE LOUNGE INDIRECTLY, CREATING A CALM AMBIENCE. THE SITE IS ALSO MOONLIT LIKE POMPEII WITH THE CRUSHED QUARTZ WHICH GLOWS AT NIGHT DUE TO ITS NATURAL REFRACTIVE QUALITIES.
‘EDEN’ IS A REPRESENTATION OF THE SIMPLE AND YET SENTENTIOUS IDEALS JONAH WOULD VALUE. ITS RAW CEDAR TIMBERS (NATURALLY INSECT REPELLING), RAMMED EARTHAND TRANSPARENT FIRED SANDS ARE THE BASIS OF WHICH SENSES COME NATURALLY. LIKEWISE THE FUSION OF ORGANIC AND SOLID FORMS SEEM EARTHLY AND YET THERE IS A DISTINCT ENDEAVOUR TO FACILITATE A WATER TREATMENT INDUSTRY. THE INTERNAL SPACE OF THE KITCHEN HAS A POROUS FLOOR FOR THE PETITE GREEN HOUSE WHICH IS LOCATED AT THE FURTHEST NORTH POINT. THE OPPOSITE END OF THE KITCHEN RECYCLES GRAY WATER, REFRIDGERATES WITHIN THE LOWER CUPBOARD (COOLER) AREAS AND LINKS VISUALLY WITH THE NEIGHBOUR. IT IS THE SECOND TECHNOLOGICAL ‘HUB’ OF THE RESIDENCE, THE PRIOR BEING THE BEDROOM ROOF.
STRUCTURE- THE FUNNEL IS CONSTRUCTED WITH THE USE OF PVC SPHERE’S INSIDE A PVC MESH, IN A HONEYCOMB PATTERN. IT ALLOWS THE FORM TO HOLD ITSELF UP- SIMILAR TO HOW BUBBLEDECK IS USED IN CONCRETE FLOORING TO CREATE LESS WEIGHT. THE BEDROOM WALLS UTILISE RAMMED EARTH AND ARE EXPOSED IN SOME AREAS TO LINK TO THE OUTSIDE. THE CORE HAS PRECAST CONCRETE SHEAR WALLS WITH A STEEL STAIRWELL WINDING INTO THE LOUNGE.
ZONING- THE NORTH-WEST EXTERIOR OF ‘EDEN’ GAINS FULL SUN DURING WINTER AFTERNOONS AND MAJORITY OF FULL SHADE DURING SUMMER DUE TO SHIFTING SUN ANGLES. THE REAR SUNKEN AREA RECEIVES MORNING LIGHT BUT EXCLUDES HOT AFTERNOON SOLAR RADIATION AND ENTICES OURDOOR LIVING. THE FRONT ENTRY THROUGH THE LOUNGE TO THE RETREAT AT THE BACK ARE ALL AREAS OF CONTINUOUS ACTIVITY. THEY FLUCTUATE WITH TEMPERATURE THROUGH DIFFERENT ENVELOPING OF HABITATS. THE STUDY AND LOUNGE ARE PUBLIC AND OPEN TO EACH OTHER FOR CROSS USE, USING INDIRECT LIGHT AND WARMER TEMPERATURES. THE STUDY AND LOWER BEDROOMS ARE SEPARATED TO PROVIDE PRIVACY WITHIN EARSHOT OF THE PUBLIC AREA. THEY ALL ARE CONSTANT TEMPERATE AREAS WITH LESS COOLING THROUGH CIRCULATION.
LIGHT PENETRATING THE SECTION DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.

ENTRY LEVEL PLAN FFL +1000

BEDROOMS PLAN FFL -2500
(NOTE THESE ARE NOT THE FINAL PLANS THAT WILL APPEAR ON THE PRESENTATION)
THE FRONT HAS A WATER CUBE THAT SHOWS HARVESTING AND STORAGE IMMEDIATELY. IT WAS NOT THE INTENT TO HIDE THIS PROCESS AND THEREFORE WAS MADE VISIBLY FUNCTIONAL.
THE AFTERNOON LIGHT IS SEEN IN THIS PHOTO ALSO WITH THE LINEAR ELEMENTS ON THE BACK GLOWING. THE LOUNGE IS NOT RECEIVING FULL DIRECT LIGHT THEREFORE ASWELL AS THE REAR OUTDOOR, THEY BECOME FUNCTIONAL SPACES DESPITE HOT WEATHER.

AS THE LIGHT GETS DIMMER AND THE SUN LOWER IN THE SKY, THE LIGHT REFLECTING INTO THE LOWERED GARDEN BECOMES SOFTER UNTIL GRADUALLY DISAPPEARING. IT WOULD BE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE LIGHTING AFTER THIS TIME.

PLACES TO SIT, SOCIALISE, DWELL AND FEEL AT HOME.

ENVELOPING OF FUNNEL MAKES SAFE AND SECURE SITTING AREA FOR VISITORS AND RESIDENTS THEMSELVES. THE FRONT STEP UP ON TO THE RAMP EXTENDS TO BECOME AN AREA TO SIT.

SEATED UNDER THE STUDY IS A STEP DOWN INTO THE REAR COURTYARD AREA. THIS LOWERED DINING AREA IS FULL OUTDOORS, BUT HIGHLY PROTECTED BY GLASS INFUSED WITH ALUMINIUM PATTERNS AND THE SOLAR HEATED FLOOR OF THE STUDY.

AFTER EXAMINING THE ENTRY INTO 'EDEN', THE USE OF A STANDARD SWING OR PIVOT DOOR WAS SCRAPPED. INSTEAD THE DOOR PUSHES OPEN ON A GLIDE AND CLOSES LOCKING INTO THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THIS AREA.

FINAL MODEL ADS4 'EDEN'

FRONT ENTRY HAS ORGANIC SHAPED FUNNEL COLLECTING TO THE MAIN RESIDENCE. MADE FROM PVC SPHERES IN A PVC MESH IT FILTERS THE WATER TO THE TANKS BELOW. THIS IMAGE SHOWS ALSO THE SUMMER WESTERN EVENING LIGHTING AS THE LOUVRES SHADE THE STAIRWELL, AND THE KITCHEN AND ENTRY ARE SHADED. THE 'WATER CUBE' WOULD HAVE PHOTOCHROMATIC GLASS FOR ADDITIONAL COMFORT IN SUMMER HOWEVER IS AT GROUND LEVEL SO THAT THE RESIDENCE NEXT DOOR (CLAIRE) WOULD SHADOW THIS AREA SOMEWHAT.
THE ENTRY RAMP WOULD BE INFUSED WITH ALUMINIUM MESHING THAT MIMICS THIS PATTERN SEEN IN THE SECOND IMAGE. THE RAMP IS TRANSPARENT SO THAT IT DOES NOT INTERFERE TOO HEAVILY WITH THE LIGHTING OF THE BEDROOM. THE SHEAR WALL BELOW THE KITCHEN HOUSES THE PIPES THAT ARE REQUIRED TO PUMP GRAY WATER FROM THE KITCHEN AND SHARED ENSUITE BELOW. THESE TWO AREAS HAVE BEEN LOCATED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER TO REDUCE PIPES AND BULKHEADS IN THE LOWER AREA BELOW GROUNDLINE. THE FRONT OF THE KITCHEN WOULD ALSO HAVE POROUS FLOORING TO ENABLE THE USE OF THIS EXTRA SPACE AS A PETITE GREEN HOUSE, FIRSTLY FOR EXTRA THERMAL COMFORT INSIDE THE ABODE AND SECONDLY FOR REDUCING GLARE IN THE KITCHEN FROM THE NORTH LIGHT.

THIS IMAGE SHOWS THE LIGHTING IN THE MORNING FROM THE EAST. THE WARMING OF INTERNAL SPACES THAT USUALLY ARE REQUIRED IN THE MORNING IS DONE NATURALLY. THE LOUVRES ON THE REAR OF THE KITCHEN WINDOW ALSO SOFTENS THE LIGHT BUT STILL ENSURES THAT IT PENETRATES THE AREA. THIS ALSO INTURN LIGHTS THE LOUNGE AREA AND THE ENTRY RAMP. THE BEDROOM IS IN FULL SHADE IN EARLY MORNING FOR THE MUCH NEEDED SLEEP IN.

THE ARFTERNOON SUN AGAIN SHOWN HERE DURING SUNSET USING REVIT SOLAR EXAMINATIONS. THERE WOULD BE A NICE COOLING BREEZE FROM THE ADJACENT PARK INTO THE RESIDENCE AND ALSO BE INVITING FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITES.

A SHADED EXAMPLE OF THE SOUTHWEST ELEVATION. IT SHOWS 'EDEN' LIT AT NIGHT FROM THE STAIRWELL AND BEDROOM. IT IS VERY ATMOSPHERIC AND IS A GREAT ENTICEMENT FOR OUTDOOR LIVING.

THIS REVIT WIRE MESH FRAME SHOWS THE CIRCULATION FROM ENTRY INTO 'EDEN' AND ALSO THE WAY IN WHICH RAINWATER IS CAPTURED BY THE FUNNEL, DISTRIBUTED BY THE FILTER POLES AND INTO THE TANKS BELOW.

OPPOSITE ELEVATION SOUTH EAST AT NIGHT WHEN THE LOUVRES LIGHT UP THIS FACADE AND THE LIGHT FROM THE KITCHEN IS EXPELLED THROUGH THE SMALL WINDOW
THE REAR DOOR TO THE OUTSIDE SUNKEN COURTYARD HAS AN INTERESTING CONSTRUCTION INTO THE BULKHEAD. THE BULKHEAD ITSELF USING A LIGHT TRAP TO BOUNCE THE LIGHT INTO THE LOUNGE ROOM. THE BOX GUTTER FOR THE STUDY IS HIDDEN WITHIN THE BULKHEAD AREA OF THE LOUNGE ROOF. THERE WOULD BE PROVISION FOR SOLAR PANELS TO BE PLACED ON THE KITCHEN ROOF ALSO.

THERE WOULD BE LANDSCAPING USING NATIVE AUSTRALIAN PLANTS WITHIN THE BOUNDARY NEAR THE KITCHEN. THIS BED WOULD BE FED GRAY WATER FROM THE KITCHEN AND HAVE A SMALL AREA WHERE THE BED COULD FLOOD AND SINK INTO THE ROCKY SOIL. THE USE OF LOUVRES AND GLASS INFUSED WITH ALUMINIUM WOULD ALSO BE IN THE REAR AREA AROUND THE OUTDOOR DINING SPACE FOR CONCEALING BINS ETC.

JUST A FEW SAMPLES OF WHAT IS TO COME:)

DEVELOPMENTS IN FINAL MODEL- BASED ON FEW ASPECTS FROM PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENTS, USING MOVING WATER TO CREATE PEACE, TRANQUILITY AND REFLECTION IN THE ABODE. USING COVER, ENVELOPING AND SUBMERSION OF PRIVATE AREAS.
(GOT SOME GREAT FEEDBACK FROM GAVIN TODAY WHICH HAS REALLY HELPED AND GETTING REALLY EXCITED AND INTO THE DESIGN. ENJOYING (ON BEHALF OF THE CLIENT) BEING INSIDE THESE SPACES. :) PUMPING THE THOUGHTS AT THE MOMENT AND SQUEEZING ANY LAST LITTLE CONCEPT OUT OF ME)
COMPROMISES IN SPACE WITH BRANKO SEEMS TO BE WORKING WELL ALSO. EVALUATED HOW MY DESIGN WILL IMPACT CLAIRE AND BRANKO'S TODAY ALSO. FEW SHADOWS DURING MORNING ON CLAIRE'S FRONT 1/3 BUT MINIMAL DUE TO TRANSPARENCY IN CANOPY. BRANKO'S KITCHEN SHOULD CREATE SOME SHADE POSSIBLY ON MY KITCHEN AND BOTH WILL SHARE VIEWS FROM A DISTANCE.
STAY TUNED....

Developments during class with Branko to determine spaces that either are shared or personal between the two sites.
Another thought about the facade on my site being a canopy inwhich there is an environment.
Sited with Branko at the North and Claire at the South of me. Branko and I are developing a joined entrance and semi-shared facade. Both have machine like qualities and our inital developments are to understand how much of the space is being used be each other. His western front will more than likely hover within some of my front facade. Not yet fully developed though, this week we should both have plans etc that will enable us to see it more easily.
i am yet to chat to Claire as I wasn't entirley sure what i'd be doing to the elevation on that side. This week should develop more and hopefully resolve things much further.

developmental stages

site
house4 towards house 3-the final destination

the southern side of house 2, prism wedge to refract light into the lower bedroom area

House 2, entry splitting between living and lower bedroom, very closed building

the basement area of house four, delightful entry with many paths from which to come. mix of rammed earth walls, timber and earth

The pit as the earth falls away from beneathe your feet at entry into house 3 reflecting on where you have come from. The lower area has a wading pool, glass wall with water running over it to mirror the occupant.

Looking toward house 1, the corkscrew. Climbing out of the earth bumping it's heels and dragging the topography with it.
